Initially, the train was primarily intended for passengers, but railway companies soon recognised the benefits of transporting goods by rail as well. Small consignments were carried, such as livestock for farmers travelling to the weekly local markets. Following its establishment in 1860, the State Railways (SS) focused on both passenger and freight transport.
In 1864, SS 3517 FO was built, specifically for the transport of livestock. The letters FO stand for livestock wagon (F) and floor area 15 m² (O). The wagon can be completely sealed, apart from the ventilation holes for the animals, of course. Inside the wagon there are rings for securing the livestock. When various railway companies merged in 1921, the livestock wagons were taken out of service. Fortunately, one was preserved for a Railway Museum that was yet to be established. This livestock wagon is the oldest surviving goods wagon in the Netherlands.
