Specifications

The luggage wagon ‘HSM D 1920’ was built in 1914 by the ‘Hannoversche Waggonfabrik’ for the HSM (and later also the NS) to transport luggage on Dutch express train services. The luggage wagon also features a toilet and two dog kennels.

The ‘throne’ on the carriage was introduced due to a new regulation. The ‘General Regulations for Service on the Railways’ of 1913 stipulated that the chief conductor must have a clear view. From the roof, he could keep a good view of the track and signals. In the 1930s, the requirement for a clear view was dropped. Consequently, many of the luggage wagons lost that characteristic superstructure. STIBANS (Foundation for the Preservation of Dutch Railway Rolling Stock Destined for Scrap) saved the D 1920 from scrapping in 1983 and, following restoration, donated it to the Railway Museum.
