NS D 4088 Black Romanian

Object number 16536

Specifications

Luggage wagon D 4088 was taken to Germany during the Second World War, along with much other rolling stock. In 2003, a German railway enthusiast found the carriage in Romania, near Bucharest. What happened to it in the intervening period is unknown. It returned to the Netherlands in 2004. Due to where it was found and its dark appearance, the museum’s carriage was nicknamed the ‘Black Romanian’.

The carriage’s number remained unknown for a long time, up until March 2007. Rust caused the old number NS D 4088 to emerge through the layer of Romanian paint. A large number of parts of this carriage are authentic; the driver’s cab and the braking system are missing. The carriage has been preserved by the museum. It is used as an exhibition space for the permanent exhibition ‘Beladen Treinen’ (Loaded Trains) about the role of the railways in the deportation of Jews during the Second World War.
