Specifications

The ten mail coaches ordered by NS in 1949 entered service in 1952. They featured a number of new innovations: fluorescent lighting, electrically illuminated tail lights, step lighting and illuminated destination boards behind the front windows. The sorting and postbag section took up most of the carriage’s space. On one side stood a large number of counter cabinets. Some of the lockers can be rotated to allow the windows behind them to be cleaned. On the other side is a sorting table, a stove and two bundle lockers with three fold-down postbag racks underneath. To enable rapid loading and unloading, the post department has four double sliding doors.

Initially, the mail carriage ran on domestic passenger trains. However, as NS wanted shorter stops at stations, there was insufficient time for loading and unloading. The carriages therefore increasingly came into service on separate mail trains. In 1979, the P7920 was taken out of service and donated to the museum by the PTT.
