Specifications

This tank wagon (‘Ketelwagen’) belongs to the State Mines and was put into service in 1916 for the transport of tar. The wagon is part of a series of tank wagons for internal transport. Later, the tank wagon was also permitted to run on the NS network. It was then given a new number: NS 515615 P. The final letter ‘P’ stands for ‘private’. It is an example of goods wagons owned by companies other than NS.

In 1987, the Staatsmijnen (now DSM) donated the tank wagon to the Railway Museum. In 2009, the wagon was repainted in the Staatsmijnen’s distinctive black colour, bearing the inscription ‘Staatsmijnen – Creosootolie’. Creosote is used for saturating wooden sleepers.

Tank wagons of this type are still in service today. They are used to transport liquid substances, such as oil. Tank wagons often feature a logo of the manufacturer or producer, such as Shell.
