From the end of the 19th century, all HSM goods wagons were closed. HSM had thousands of these wagons built up until 1919. A closed goods wagon is used to transport freight that must not be exposed to the elements. The HSM 33208 is one such closed goods wagon. The HSM 33208 was eventually renumbered to NS 9807.
Closed wagons can be divided into standard wagons and special wagons. The standard wagon, such as the 33208, is loaded from the side. Some of these wagons have a cooling system to transport perishable goods such as vegetables, fruit and beer. There are also special wagons of this type. These have, for example, a sliding wall or sliding roof, making it easier to load and unload goods. A well-known special closed wagon is the red PTT wagon, which has been transporting post within the Netherlands since the 1970s.
