W. Kuipers

In 1890, W. Kuipers from Haarlem completed a model of a steam locomotive from the HSM’s 1000 series, built to a 1:15 scale. Many of these locomotives were named for Greek goddesses. Kuipers named this model after himself, but the locomotive was actually named ‘Eos’ after a goddess from Greek mythology. And although Kuipers was employed as an instrument maker in the Central Railway Workshop in Haarlem, it is unknown whether he was asked to build this model or did so in his own free time. What is certain, however, is that his masterpiece was displayed at the World’s Fair in Amsterdam in 1895. The model remained in his possession, as several years later he offered it for sale in the newspaper for an unknown sum.
