Specifications

The 1600 series was built in the 1980s for what is known as mixed transport. They are suitable for both fast passenger transport and the slow heavy hauling of goods. Like the 1300 series, the locomotives in this series were eventually given names. The NS 1656 was christened ‘Hoogeveen’. Around 2000, the series was divided between passenger service and goods transport when the NS split into different operating divisions. The NS passenger division was assigned engines numbered 1631 through 1658. To avoid confusion, these locomotives were renumbered as the 1800 series. The 1656 became number 1856 at that point. The locomotive came into the museum’s possession in 2010 when the series became obsolete as a result of dwindling demand for pulled carriages. The museum gave it back its original number, 1656.
