Versteeg's Children

“Versteeg's Children should now go to bed.”

This was the secret code sent to the NS management board to confirm that the call to strike through Radio Orange of 17 September 1944 was authentic. The code meant that railway employees had to go on strike immediately, by order of the Dutch government in London. ‘Versteeg’ was one of the false names used by NS President Willem Hupkes, and his ‘children’ were the railway employees. Why was NS required to call a strike, what happened during the strike and what events preceded it? Discover the collection of the Railway Museum and stories about NS during the Second World War.
